Vietnam is officially a "Socialist Republic". The Vietnamese Communist Partycontrols all the country's political institutions. The Vietnamese National Assembly is the supreme body of state and is renewed every five years. Elections are by indirect suffrage, all Vietnamese aged over 18 are allowed to vote. The supreme power of the state is assigned to the Secretary General of Vietnamese Communist Party.

Since 1997, Nguyen Minh Triet is the President of Vietnam, Nguyen Tan Dung is the Prime Minister. Nguyen Phu Trong is for its General Secretary of the Party since 2011.
